May 21, 2004: I lost all emails received between 20 May and 22 May 2004. Please resend any mail transmitted at this moment.
March 31, 2004: Sorry, but I'm no more maintaining this project.
If someone want to take over this project, let me know at babytrans@tuxee.net.
Also, I'm sorry to not be able to answer everyone asking question about this project.
Babytrans is a graphical front-end for GTK+/Gnome that allows you to use the dictionaries from Babylon Translator software available under Windows, on the Linux/X platform. It use only the old dictionnary format (.dic) and do not handle (yet) the new format (.bgl/.dat).
Note: Apparently I'm badly informed, since .dic are always the current format, and .bgl are glossaries. This format is apparently encrypted (with Cipher Square algorithm) and I will need more time to reverse engineer it.. I will post beginning of this work on this homepage soon.
Update: Ok, it seems that .bgl are used for anything now, so the files listed below are not usable anymore with Babytrans. You have either to wait (probably a long time, given the free time I have) that I discover their formats, or (sorry) to use Wine to use them (untested).
Nov 16, 2002: Actual *BETA* code is available here: http://fjolliton.free.fr/babytrans/test/babytrans-0.9.2-rc1.tar.gz. But this is *NOT* the final 0.9.2 release. And note that the code doesn't compile correctly with FreeBSD without some minor modifications. Otherwise, the code compile and run correctly on my Gentoo (gcc 2.95.3 and gcc 3.2) with GTK+ 1.2.10. Untested under other platforms. If you test this version please send me a mail to babytrans@tuxee.net to let me know if it work under your platform (please specify your operating system and your GCC version.). Thanks for your help. [No support for the new format was added. Sorry.]
Nov 12, 2002: I'm actually reworking the code for clean up and simplify futur update (like adding Gtk+2 support, and perhaps support for Gnome2 applet). The support for GCC 2.7 or older versions was dropped. A Python library will also be added to the source (to allow access to old .dic dictionnary without the C library.) A XML output is also planned.
Page updated: Links to Babylon .exe for each language added.
Version 0.9.1 now contain translation of README in portuguese.
Version 0.9 will hopefully correct compilation error with gcc 2.95.2 and gcc 3.0. It was consequence of bad detection of the need for option -fhonor-std. This version also disable some shorcut (Escape for quitting, and CTRL-z for iconizing window) when compiled as applet.
Version 0.3.9 introduce Gnome applet possibility, and some changes to compile Babytrans with more compiler.
You can get the .exe file on Babylon web site, and decompress them with unzip to obtain the various .dic files needed.
Last time I have checked (november 13, 2001) the files where located here:
There is another dictionnaries but I have not tested them.
Alternatively, several users are using the following site to download dictionnaries (files are dated from 1999):
ftp://ftp.ac-grenoble.fr/ge/languages/babylon_dict/Philipp Guëhring have integrated Babytrans source code into its project named *Quick. Officially he is the new maintainer. But actually there is some code synchronization to do between my own source code and Sourceforce hosted code.
